Dublin has an action packed sporting calendar with events taking place throughout the year. There are a number of stadiums and venues around the city as well as in the surrounding county.
Croke Park is home to the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and with a capacity of over 82,000, it is the 3rd largest stadium in Europe. The stadium is primarily used for Gaelic games and hosts a number of main sporting events each year including the All-Ireland Club Championships and the All-Ireland football and hurling finals. The venue is situated on the north side of the city in Drumcondra, within walking distance of O’Connell Street and is easily accessed by public transport.
Aviva Stadium is home to the Irish rugby team as well as the Republic of Ireland football team. The stadium was built on the site of the former Lansdowne Road and opened in 2010. The Ireland rugby team play all home games at the stadium and some Leinster games also take place here. The Republic of Ireland soccer team play their home games in the Aviva Stadium and other soccer competitions that have taken place include FAI Cup Final, 2011 Nations Cup and 2011 Europa League Final.
The Royal Dublin Society (RDS) is located in Ballsbridge in Dublin 4 and hosts equestrian events throughout the year including the Dublin Horse Show, an international and national show jumping competition. The venue is also used for Leinster rugby home games, Magners League, Heineken Cup, RBS 6 Nations as well as some pre-season games.
For fans of greyhound racing, there are two stadiums in Dublin – Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium and Harold’s Cross Stadium. With racing on different nights of the week and hospitality packages on offer, a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed.
