Belfast Botanic Gardens

Botanic Gardens Belfast is one of the most popular gardens in Belfast. It was established in 1828 by the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society and was initially a private park with limited public access. After it was bought over by Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council), it opened to the public in 1895.

The park consists of the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine. The former features a range of tropical plants, seasonal displays, and birds of paradise. Its main highlight is its conservatory which is one of the earliest examples of a curvilinear cast iron glasshouse in the world.

It was designed by Charles Lanyon and built by Richard Turner. The Tropical Ravine, on the other hand, contains some of the oldest seed plants, banana, cinnamon, bromeliad and orchid plants. It has a unique design of sunken ravine which runs the length of the building. It was built by head gardener Charles McKimm back in 1889. Not to miss is their extensive rose garden and for the tree enthusiasts, seeing the rare oaks planted in the 1880s would be a real treat.

The garden also features children’s playground, bowling green and beautiful walks around the grounds. It is no wonder this important part of Belfast’s Victorian history is a popular hang-out area for residents, students, and tourists plus a popular venue for concerts, festivals, and many other events.

The garden is near the Queen’s University and within the Botanic Gardens is the Ulster Museum so it’s worth visiting as you can cover several attractions in one area.
