Lissadell House and Gardens

The impressive house is situated just outside Carney, 20 minutes’ drive from Clayton Hotel Sligo, dramatically below Table Mountain, it is a sheer delight to visit all year round.

Built in the 1830s, Lisadell House was the childhood home of Constance Markievicz, her sister and her brother. As one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, and one of the first females to be elected to Irish government, Constance Markievicz is an integral figure of modern Irish history and politics. Although impassive and forbidding looking on the outside the home has a more intimate, warmer feel inside, created by incorporating large windows in the design to allow more natural light to flood the interior.

A trip to Lissadell House promises a pleasant afternoon wandering through the beautifully restored estate. The house is the crucible of Ireland’s historic, literary and garden heritage explored through the Yeats Gallery, the Countess Markievicz Exhibition, Waterloo 200 and guided house tours. For the garden enthusiast the Alpine Garden, created in 1740, still delights; the Victorian Kitchen Garden is home to the Langford potato collection, with over 200 varieties dating from the 1770s.

For the kids, an activity centre including woodland obstacle courses, kite surfing, stand up paddling and more can be found in Lissadell House.
