Sporting Events Manchester
From the world famous Old Trafford to the world class Ethiad Stadium Manchester is home to some of the best sporting facilities in the UK. Formerly a host of the Commonwealth Games, Manchester is a sports lovers city regularly holding major sporting events.
Manchester United is the most successful football club in England with a global fan base attracting thousands of fans to the city each week. Also known as “The Red Devils” the club are now one of the richest football clubs in the world. With a proud tradition of winning matches and titles, under the management of club hero Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United went on to win an astounding 38 trophies between 1986 and 2013.
Manchester United play their matches at the world famous Old Trafford Stadium which boasts a capacity of 75,635 making it one of the largest football stadiums in Europe. Sir Bobby Charlton nicknamed the stadium “The Theatre of Dreams” and it has been the stage for some of the most entertaining football icons over the years.
Manchester United also have a proud tradition of having some of the greatest footballers of their time playing for them. Some recent icons would include Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, George Best & Bryan Robinson to name but a few.
Manchester City Football Club is another world class team located in Manchester also boasting a global fan base. Although not yet as successful as their neighbours, in recent years they have become one of the most dominant teams in English football. Sir Alex Ferguson once remarked to Manchester City as being “the noisy neighbours” due to their recent successes on the pitch.
The Etihad Stadium is home to Manchester City and boasts a capacity of 47,805. Over the years there have being a number of world class players that have played for Manchester city which include Uwe Rösler, Georgi Kinkladze, Sergio Agüero, Yaya Touré, Carlos Tevez and Vincent Kompany.
Old Trafford Cricket Ground
Old Trafford Cricket Ground is one of the oldest test venues in England and has hosted many of the top cricket matches including the Ashes and the 1956 Cricket World Cup semi-finals. The ground is currently home to Lancashire County Cricket Club and the England cricket team. The ground is also used for hosting concerts and has newly refurbished conference facilities.
Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., Oasis, Rihanna, Beyonce and Bon Jovi have performed concerts at the ground in recent years.
The National Cycling Centre
Opening in 1994, The National Cycling Centre was the first indoor Olympic cycling track in the UK and is now regarded best tracks in the world.
Over the years, The National Cycling Centre has expanded to include a purpose built indoor BMX Complex as well as offices for British Cycling. There is a comprehensive BMX track program available allow riders of all ages and skill levels to get involved.
Mountain Bikers can also use the 12km of mountain bike trails which run through Clayton Vale comprising of 4 different skill levels.LESS INFORMATION
