Food Waste Management
Food Production & Retail: Unsold or uneaten food no longer fit for consumption is collected by FSM .
Food Waste at our plant: The food waste is brought to the FSM plant in Co. Meath where it is separated from its packaging. The food is sent to the A.D. anaerobic digestion plant and packaging is sent for further recycling.
Anaerobic Digestion: At the A.D. plant, the food is broken down in large sealed tanks by bacteria, (much like what happens in the human digestive system). This process produces methane gas and a residue known as digestate.
Biogas onwards: The bio-methane gas is then fed into engines which produce electricity to be fed directly into the national grid.
Agriculture & Electricity: The digestate is used to produce a compost like fertiliser for use in Agriculture.
