Ok, ok… we’ve done it. We tried all the pubs in Cambridge, purely for blogging purposes. Yeah…I don’t believe myself either. But we have managed to compile a fairly extensive list of some of the best pubs in Cambridge. If you are looking for a cosy Cambridge pub or a pub that serves amazing craft beer, look no further. The Architect
A modern British public house and social dining room in the heart of Cambridge, this award-winning pub serves a variety of real ale, craft beer, wine and spirits, with a strong focus on gin. There is a huge selection of US bottles, such as Flying Dog, Anchor, and Sierra Nevada. They try to source as many ingredients from the surrounding area and work with local suppliers (as Clayton do) and have a modern take on casual British dining.
The Cambridge Blue
A pub for all beer lovers out there. On entering the pub, you will see three fridges stacked with more than 100 bottled beers. Those chillers contain mainly Belgian brews but also a connoisseur’s selection of less well-known US craft beers, such as Sierra Nevada’s Kellerweis, Odell’s Runoff Red IPA and Two Roads’ Ol’ Factory Pils. Based 10 minutes’ walk out of city centre, it’s definitely worth the stroll.
The Cambridge Brew House
The city’s only brewpub filled with lovely, chatty staff. The Cambridge Brew House offers a comprehensive range of cask ales, including some from their very own brewery, alongside beers from other local breweries. In addition, you will also find a large selection of fantastic craft beers on tap from both local and international brewers on the ‘Craft Beer Wall’, and a broad selection of canned and bottled beers from around the world.
Grain & Hop
Owned by Greene King, Grain Store is the first of its kind being a dedicated craft beer bar. It’s a great looking, trendy pub looking to expose some drinkers to exciting new beers they would otherwise not have encountered. The pub looks out across the adjacent parkland of Parker’s Piece and the lovely staff inside will provide you with plastic cups if you want to go and sit on the park in the sun with your drinks. A great place in Cambridge for high-quality craft beers and moreish food.
Maypole
The Maypole pub has been family-run since February 1982. It is tucked away between Bridge street and Jesus green and can be a little difficult to find, but once found there are many reasons to head there. It is known for having up to 16 real ales on hand pump, a wide range of spirits and liqueurs including 30+ single malts, over 40 gins and a gorgeous outdoor covered and decked area to sit on those hot summer evenings.
The Mill Pub
Perfected located on the grassy banks of the River Cam, the 19th Century Mill is one of Cambridge’s most popular pubs and renowned for its wide choice of well-kept real ales. It is a winner of not one or two, but three CAMRA Awards including Cambridge Pub of the Year 2015. In the summer, you can take your drinks and food outside to enjoy next to the Millpond and in the winter perhaps draw up a chair in the cosy bar and play one of their many board games. Also, a major plus point is that they are dog-friendly, so you can bring your four-legged friend along too.
