Cork’s City ‘Young at Heart’ Destination Tips

Things to do in Cork city  on your over 55’s Break

You’ve reached an exciting point in your life. You are no longer constrained by workday responsibilities, and now is the time to start exploring places you’ve been intending to see for years but never got around to.

Cork’s compact city centre is packed with luxury boutiques, an 18th-century indoor English Market, upmarket restaurants and gastropubs serving traditional Irish stew alongside live folk music events, theatres such as the Everyman and Cork Opera House, and cultural hubs such as the Crawford Art Gallery. With so much to offer, we’ve compiled a list of top destination suggestions that are all within a ten-minute walk of us!

1. Nano Nagle Place

This magnificently restored convent is an oasis in the heart of the city, celebrating Nano Nagle’s ideal of education as a means of empowerment. The complex is comprised of a museum, history rooms, gardens, a café, a gift store, and a Cork focused bookshop.

2. Glucksman Gallery

The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in creative learning and public access to the visual arts. It was named the ‘Best Public Building in Ireland’ in 2005 and features an interlocking set of rooms with views up and down the river lee.

3. Shandon Bells & Tower St Annes Church

Located in Cork City’s Shandon district Shandon Bells await your ringing! While on your brief walk keep an eye out for the ‘Goldie fish’ perched atop the clock tower. Climbing the 132 steps you’ll have 360-degree views of the city and see the inner workings of the famed 18th-century clock dubbed ‘The four-faced liar’.

4. Cork Butter Museum

The Cork Butter Museum preserves the county’s history of butter production and sale and was formerly located on the site of the Cork butter market. The museum chronicles Ireland’s commercial, social, and domestic life from medieval times to the present.

5. UCC Presidents Gardens and Stone Corridor

The President’s Garden is a beautifully cultivated landscape that highlights the quad’s symmetry and is home to some of Corks oldest tree specimens, including Giant Redwoods. Visitors can step further back in time by visiting the Stone Cover Corridor, which contains a collection of Ogham stones illustrating an early coded form of the Irish language, the perfect afternoon activity to enjoy on your over 55’s break.
