Waste & Recycling At Clayton Hotels

  • We are moving away from the use of plastic straws, plastic water bottles and plastic backed drinks coasters – we have saved just over 0.5 million plastic straws a year going to landfill since their removal from the business in 2019.
  • We have reviewed and are replacing all our marketing merchandise material such as pens, diaries and corporate gifts for more sustainable alternatives.
  • All our takeaway coffee cups and lids are 100% recyclable. We have also introduced a “keep cup” to our Red Bean Roastery Coffee Shop outlets.
  • In an effort to reduce our usage of paper, we are trialling the “Press Reader” app for guest use in a selection of our hotels. The app allows users to access 100’s of newspapers and magazines through their device be it smart phone, tablet or laptop.
  • We have introduced a new SOP with the help of our waste partner to ensure all our team members are fully aware of how all waste streams should be handled. This in turn will be supported by the inclusion of a module on waste recycling in our company training calendar.
  • We are engaging with all our large suppliers on initiatives to reduce the volume of packaging waste being taken into our hotels.
  • All our food waste is processed through anaerobic digestion to produce energy that is delivered back to the national grid- In 2019 we sent 1,236 tonne of food to this processing plant which created 494.5 Mwh of energy & 247.2 tonne of fertiliser.
