James Connolly Visitor Centre

Áras Uí Chonghaile is a visitor centre dedicated to telling the story of James Connolly. Best known for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising, Connolly was also a leading Trade Unionist, Socialist, and Republican.

The James Connolly Experience guides visitors through an exhibition that tells the story of Connolly from his birth in Edinburgh in 1868 to his death in Dublin in 1916, to the unique library, Leabharlann Uí Chonghaile, and through the art and historic collections.

Lasting approximately 40 minutes, the tour will introduce you to many interactive features and historic artifacts and will immerse you in the story of James Connolly as you make your way through the Centre.

The interactive exhibition tells the story of his life, from his birth in Edinburgh to meeting his wife Lily in Dublin, to traveling across the United States spreading the word of trade unionism.

It also holds an exclusive Historic Collection which is a unique insight into those times and presents a display of original art and artifacts unavailable anywhere else in the world. This collection of Irish memorabilia, artifacts, and artwork is a must-see for everyone who has an interest in our past.

Leabharlann Uí Chonghaile, the Connolly Library, is located on the first floor of Áras Uí Chonghaile and boasts a unique and profound collection of writings by and about James Connolly. It offers a quiet, reflective, and unique space for researchers, academics, and those who seek to grow and develop their understanding of James Connolly, a man of remarkable ideas and writings.

The Centre also hosts a modern, fully furnished events space complete with Wifi, a drop-down projector screen, and a balcony, which offers commanding and picturesque views of the Belfast Hills and across the city as far as the Shipyards and Docks where Connolly was once based. On-site catering is available.

The building has been adapted in an effort to keep our visitors and staff safe as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and we ask that all customers adhere to current restrictions during their visit.

Áras Uí Chonghaile has also received the Tourism Industry Standard that confirms that it is compliant with COVID-19 industry procedures. Tá muid Réidh le Dul!
