We have put together a list of our favourite coastal walks, where you can feast on the beautiful views of natural scenery while getting some outdoorsy exercise too. Coastal Walks in North Dublin
1. Howth Cliff
DART | 30 mins from Dublin City
Howth Cliff in Dublin is a favourite walk for locals. You can start this walk from Howth Dart Station, or from the car park at Howth Summit. You will be treated to incredible coastal views during the entirety of the walk. If you are an early riser, and decide to embark on the Howth Cliff walk, you can expect one of the most breath-taking Dublin sunrises. This walk is perfect for those who are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Dublin without actually leaving Dublin. 2. Poolbeg Lighthouse

The Poolbeg Lighthouse walk is the ultimate coastal walk in Dublin, taking you to the 254-year-old Poolbeg Lighthouse. This exceptional walk with sweep you off your feet, with stunning views of Dublin Bay, Howth Head, Dun Laoghaire Harbour and the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. Begin your journey from Sandymount village for a lengthy 2-hour walk.

3. Sandymount Beach

Sandymount beach offers solitude to those looking for calmness, relaxation or just for a day of sightseeing away from the hustle of the city. You can get your steps in along the beach, take part in yoga classes or workout sessions, or enjoy plenty of other activities during the summer season. Take in the views of the iconic Poolbeg Chimneys of Dublin’s skyline or brave a dip in the cool waters of the Irish sea.

4. Irishtown Nature Park
Visit the Irish Nature Park for a lovely afternoon walk in the park. The Irishtown Nature Park is on the southside of the Poolbeg peninsula. The main track through the park skirts the coastline, looking out over Sandymount Strand, with its fast-moving tides, while several more minor paths crisscross the hilly uplands of the park, which rises quite steeply. The park has a lovely aesthetic background which is ideal for taking beautiful pictures making it a very instagramable park indeed. The lush greenery and wildflowers scattered everywhere in the park enhance the park’s intriguing character and makes it an oasis of tranquillity and nature in Dublin city. The view from the bench at the entrance of the park is spectacular. You can just sit there and enjoy the heavenly view while listening to the birds.
Killiney Hill and Dalkey Hill

The Dalkey hill and Killiney hill are part of a more extensive public family park known as Killiney Park, which sits comfortably between Dalkey and Killiney villages. The walk is designed for hikers and nature lovers, offering spectacular views of the Irish coastline and the surrounding areas. Enjoy the sights of Dublin to the northwest, the Irish Sea to the east, and Bray Head and the Wicklow Mountains to the south. On a clear day, some have even spotted the mountains of Wales across the sea! Step back in time with a visit to Dalkey Castle, one of the many things to do outside Dublin city centre, before exploring the walking trails through meadows, forest, and hilly terrain that adorn Dalkey/Killiney Hill. Along the way, you’ll also find several monuments, two of which are the Obelisk, alternatively known as the witch’s hat, and a small step pyramid.
- Although Killiney and Dalkey Hill loop walk is a moderately easy trail, there are steps along the way, so the route may not be suitable for all!
6. Killiney Beach

If you are looking for a beach walk in Dublin, Killiney beach is a long, stony beach located in the beautiful Dublin town known as Killiney. This stunning beach walk offers breath-taking views of the surrounding area, with sights of the rocky coastline including Dalkey Island, Sorrento Terrace, and Bray Head. Killiney Beach stretches approximately 2.5km, moderately easy walk, and can take from 30-45 minutes to undertake.
• Killiney beach has a small car park, that can be reached via a tunnel under the railway line from Strathmore Road, the beach can then be reached via a short flight of steps.
7. Dun Laoghaire Pier Walk

Dun Laoghaire pier is a popular place for walkers and joggers. Take in the fresh sea air as you walk and keep an eye on the water as there is always something going on there to watch! If you are lucky to grab one of the seats that line the pier you could spend an hour or two just people watching. Whatever the weather, the pier is always a romantic and idyllic place to take a stroll, breathe in the sea air, and enjoy stunning views of Dublin Bay. Dun Laoghaire is the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon along the Dublin coast.

Yes, DART and buses connect to all major coastal locations. Parking can be difficult to find in these areas, and there can be traffic congestion so we would recommend planning your route on public transport.
Howth, Dun Laoghaire (Forty Foot), and Portmarnock are all fantastic options for both swimming and walking.
